Winter Exploration

There are many winding trails to hike at Innsbrook and the colder months bring a unique experience of their own. The sounds of drips from ice melting and the snapping of twigs from unseen animals nearby help us to forget the business we’ve left behind and to reflect on the beauty of outdoors that we are surrounded by at Innsbrook.

Hikers may see a range of animals on the IBK trails, including bald eagles, cardinals, barred owls, beavers, an occasional fox, an abundance of deer and much more! There are seven scenic trails to explore and discover the diverse views of each that change with every season.

A few essentials to grab before heading out into the white-washed wilderness are insulated boots, gloves and a hat. If you will be in the cold for any length of time, wear waterproof pants and a moisture-wicking, tight-fitting layer under your clothes to keep you dry. Multiple clothing layers are important since your body gets warmer the longer you hike.

Even if the sky is overcast, wear sunscreen. Your dermatologist will thank you later and you will appreciate not having to explain a sunburn in winter.
It’s also helpful to know your fitness level. IBK offers a trail guide that will help determine if you need a shorter trail like Sonnenblick Trail, a ½ mile forested path in the extreme southeast corner of the community, or if you want more of a challenge, the Tyrolean Trail provides more than three miles of different attractions and challenges. There are many trail options with varying distance and terrain, so you can do several in one day or just choose a short distance to get you started.

For additional tips, the American Hiking Society recommends “Ten Essentials” that should accompany you on any trip in the great outdoors.

One of the essentials we liked was a bag for litter to help keep our environment clean as part of our motto to live in harmony with nature.

The adventure of a peaceful walk may change your perspective and shake off the winter listlessness. Be extra cautious during extreme temperature drops. It’s better to snuggle next to a fire than risk the effects of severe cold. But wait! This is Missouri and it won’t be long before the temperature changes! Be safe and enjoy the beautiful atmosphere of Innsbrook!
