Right Down the Line with Pickleball
There’s a sport sweeping through Innsbrook and the country that’s full of fun and laughter for those joining the game! The unusually named game is pickleball, a paddle sport that joins the skills of badminton, tennis and table tennis into one family-friendly activity. The sport is played with a paddle and a plastic ball resembling a whiffle ball.
Beyond the physical benefits of play, there have been studies conducted to show that pickleball from a cognitive standpoint, sharpens your planning and decision-making skills as you must constantly anticipate and execute the next shot. As we age, most of our exercise is moving forward. In pickleball you are not only going forward and backward but also are moving the body laterally and in all directions, helping prevent future falls.
Sator referred to a recent study conducted sharing pickleball as a sport that helps your cognitive abilities while providing aerobic benefits.
“Pickleball is a social sport for all ages,” she continued. “We have made many new friends and met fun and interesting people playing. Athletes who previously played tennis find a lot of appeal in the game.”
“In October, Innsbrook will host the third annual Gherkinball Fest where pickleball players will travel from Kansas City, Lake of the Ozarks, Illinois and many other places to join the game. More than 200 players attended last year.”
Spectators are welcome to join the fun on Saturday and Sunday, October 6 and 7. Proceeds will be donated to Shelter Challenge 2018 to build a Warren County animal shelter. Make a weekend of it and also join us at the Innsbrook Home Tour on Saturday, October 6.
The Innsbrook Pickleball Club is also planning a workshop to learn the basics of the game when the weather cools. More information will be available announcing the time and location in the future. Property owners and their guests who are interested in learning about the game of pickleball are also welcome Sundays when the group plays at 9 a.m. at the Tennis and Pickleball Center by the Stables. Paddles and balls are available to teach new players the elements of the game.
