Forget the umbrella; we’ve got you covered this weekend with five great things to do that will keep you (mostly) dry.
1. TURN OFF THE TV AND PICK UP A BOOK.
Yes, it’s truly hard to do sometimes, but trust us—it’s well worth it. Tear yourself away from the latest Pawn Stars episode or House Hunters marathon (that’s what DVRs are for, right?) and crack open a good novel. Grab a blanket, snuggle in, and spend the afternoon reading. There’s nothing quite like reading a good book while the rain patters on the roof.
2. MAKE A HOME-COOKED MEAL.
What’s the point in having all those cookbooks if you don’t ever use them? Plan a delicious homemade meal and have guests or family pitch in. If you’re cooking for several people, let everyone choose a dish of their own to prepare. Get creative and make up a menu, set the table with candles and place cards, and have a gourmet night in. Don’t forget that Innsbrook’s Country Market is now open, so you can run down and grab ingredients that you’ve forgotten.
3. HAVE A FAMILY GAME NIGHT (OR AFTERNOON).
OK, we know that the mere mention of “family game night” can induce groans and looks of resentment. But seriously, we think you’ll find out it is pretty darn fun. Introduce the kids to classics like Hearts, Trouble or dominoes. Get even the most morose teenager to crack a smile with giggle-encouraging games like Cranium or charades. Like Mikey, if you try it you just might like it.
4. GO TO THE MOVIES… INDOORS.
Although we did previously tell you to turn off the TV, planning a movie night doesn’t really count as “watching TV.” Have the family or guests vote on a movie. Set up theater-type seating by positioning couches and chairs in rows. Kids can have fun “selling” popcorn and snacks and taking homemade tickets. When the lights dim down you won’t even feel like you’re in your own living room.
5. EXPLORE NATURE’S WET SIDE.
Every now and then you just have to let the inner kid take control, put on those galoshes, and go jumping through puddles. If you’re going to get wet, you might as well go for it. Dress the family in old clothes and waterproof shoes and ponchos, and see what you discover outdoors. What wildlife can you spot enjoying the rain? You’ll get muddy; you’ll get soaked. That’s the point. Plus, there’s nothing that feels quite as comfortable as coming in from a wet, chilly day, drying off, and putting on some warm, dry clothes. Have fun!
