About the Winery:
Orin Swift Cellars was founded in1998 in Napa Valley by winemaker David Swift Phinney. Named by combining his father’s middle name (Orin) and his mother’s maiden name (Swift), the winery is famous for its bold, intense blends and striking, highly unconventional labels.
- The Early Days and ‘The Prisoner”: Phinney’s passion for wine began during a 1995 study abroad program in Florence, Italy. After graduating, he worked the harvest at Robert Mondavi Winery in 1997. Realizing he wanted to make wine for himself, he purchased two tons of zinfandel and launched Orin Swift in 1998.
His breakthrough came in 2000 when he created “The Prisoner,” a highly popular, unorthodox Zinfandel-based blend with a label featuring a Goya etching. The wine became a cult classic and established Orin Swift’s reputation for boundary pushing blends.
- Expansion and E&J Gallo Acquisition: As Orin Swift grew, Phinney also consulted for other wineries while expanding his portfolio. In 2010, following the massive success of “The Prisoner,” he sold the brand to Huneeus Vintners (later acquired by Constellation Brands). As part of that deal, Phinney agreed to an eight-year non-compete clause for Zinfandel-based wines. Once the non-compete expired, he released a wildly popular comeback Zinfandel called “8 Years in the Dessert”.
In 2016, Phinney sold the Orin Swift brand, remaining inventory, and the tasting room in St. Helena to E&J Gallo Winery. Phinney stayed on as the head winemaker, ensuring the brand maintained its distinctive storytelling, provocative imagery, and high-quality liquid.
